Changing the Story: Post-Election Reflections

With big change, comes big uncertainty.  A new administration will begin January 20th, 2017, that isn’t going to look like the last eight years. There are very scary times ahead for those of us who champion a progressive agenda for social change.

And part of the reason for this is we operate out of different stories.

Trump operates out of a story he has summarized in the meme: Make America great again.  In four words he captures a picture of the post-war prosperity of the 1950’s when the American middle-class was expanding, our global power dominated the world as we fought the Soviet Union, and white people were in firm control of this nation.  Those rust belt and sun belt voters who look backwards to that time and wish to recreate it, are the ones who put Trump in office.  It is a story of unapologetic white cultural dominance that has the racist elements in our society coming out of the closet and cheering Trump on.  Not since the 1950’s has it been acceptable to be a white supremacist in a coalition that has brought a president to power.  (continue reading by following this link)
