Forum: Dr. Brandon Gorman “Irrational Islamophobia: Terrorism, Shari’a Law, and Women’s Rights”

Islamophobia is alive and well in america. The Republican presidential candidate has called for banning Muslim immigration and has promised to create a database to keep track of Muslim-Americans, violence against Muslims in the United States continues to rise, and legislatures in 34 states have considered anti-Muslim legislation in the past six years. This talk will bring data to bear on the questions of terrorism, barbarism, violence against women, and other issues with the goal of dispelling American misconceptions about Muslims and Islam.

Dr. Brandon Gorman is an Assistant Professor of sociology at the University at Albany, SUNY. His research investigates how people engage with and understand international politics, with a focus on the Middle East and North Africa.
